Epidemiology of autoimmune bullous diseases in the Rijeka area

The aim of the study was to determine epidemiological characteristics of different autoimmune bullous diseases in the Rijeka area. In this retrospective study, data on both outpatients and inpatients with autoimmune bullous diseases treated during the 1990-2001 period were reviewed. The diagnosis was made by clinical examination, pathohistology and immunofluorescence methods. Patient sex, age at onset, type of disease, and mucosal involvement in pemphigus and pemphigoid patients were analyzed. A total of 45 patients with autoimmune bullous diseases were seen during the study period. There were 18 (40, 0%) male and 27 (60, 0%) female patients. Nineteen (42, 2%) patients had intraepidermal bullae (pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus vegetans, pemphigus foliaceus, and 26 (57, 8%) had subepidermal autoimmune bullous dermatoses. In the Rijeka area, the incidence of pemphigoid was higher than that of pemphigus. Women were more frequently affected than men in both groups.
