Polymorphism of HLA-C gens in Croatian patients with psoriasis

Psoriasis is a T-cell mediated disease associated with some HLA antigens like many other autoimmune diseases. However, this is the only disease associated with HLA-C gens. Therefore, we have studied the distribution of Cw alleles in Croatian patients with psoriasis. Hundred-eight unrelated patients with psoriasis from the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Rijeka, were divided in groups according to the family history and age of disease onset. Hundred thirty-nine healthy unrelated individuals served as a control. HLA-Cw alleles were analyzed using ARMS-PCR method. We found statistically significant increase for Cw*02 (p=0.013 ; RR=2.71) and Cw*0602 (p=0.0000.1 ; RR=32.24) in psoriatic patients when compared to control. Patients with positive family history (N=49) showed a significant increase of Cw*0602 (p=0.01 ; RR=3.07) in comparison to patients with negative family history (N=59). Patients with type 1 psoriasis (age of onset less than 30 yrs, positive family history) showed statistically highly significant association with Cw*0602 (p=0.00001 ; RR=14.45). Patients with type II psoriasis (age of onset later than 40 yrs, negative family history) had significant association with C*03 (p=0.006 ; RR=5.85). In conclusion, HLA-Cw*0602 allele showed the strongest association with psoriasis in Croatian patients, especially for type I that is inherited and has an early onset. The presence of Cw*0602 allele alone carries a significant risk for developing psoriasis.
