Antiepileptic drugs and pregnancy registry: preliminary results

Women with epilepsy have greater difficulties in becoming pregnant as compared in women in the general population. The use of many antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of birth defects. Many doctors and patients are faced the difficulty in balancing the teratogenic risk resulting from seizures during pregnancy against the risks of taking AEDs o prevent these seizures. Because of the great interest in the information on outcome of pregnancy following maternal exposure to AEDs, a number of European groups with the experience have decided to form a European consortium to set up a prospective multicenter for the study of pregnancies with AEDs. The data from all participating groups will be shared in the European Registry of Antiepileptic Drugs and Pregnancy (EURAP). We are participating in this study as an individual centre from Croatia under cooperation of the Italian European Regional Commission. The aim of our study is to present our experiences in conducting EURAP protocol. During the 1.5- year period, we have included 12 patients. Data on each pregnant woman have been collected using standardized electronic Case Record Form (CRF). All patients should be enrolled as soon as possible and followed-up throughout pregnancy, after delivery and until the infant reaches one year of age. We hope that our results will be useful in fulfilling the primary objective of EURAP study in evaluating the comparative degree of safety of AEDs in the human foetus with reference to the new and old AEDs used as monotherapy or in combinations.
