Quality of life and epilepsy

Patients with long-standing epilepsies are associated with considerable restrictions on daily living. The self-perceptions of stigma, schooling, social contacts and unemployment are associated with severity of epilepsy, perceived side effects of drugs and additional handicaps. In March 1978, 13 – old girl suddenly lost consciousness. Neck stiffness suggested SAH. CT scanning revealed an extremely large left frontoparietal intracerebrale haematoma caused by bleeding from arteriovenous malformations. The lesion was completely rejected surgically. The transitory right hemiparesis recovered fully after several months. In July 1980 she had first partial motor fit in right arm and leg. EEG showed focus of sharp spike and wave in left frontotemporale region. CT demonstrated large porencephalic cyst. In following years she had very frequent epileptic seizures, mostly partial motor on the right side, often secondarily generalised. In spite of such intractable epilepsy she continued schooling and became a clerk. She married in 1987 and two years later she got pregnant. During pregnancy she received antiepileptic polytherapy. A normal child was born on time. The seizures have become rare and there is no decline in global cognitive abilities. Adolescence with rapid physical and emotional development can be a trying time for anyone. Teenagers with epilepsy have considerable problems due to imposition of restrictions and prohibitions on everyday activities and of course, the problems of epileptic seizures them-selves. Being aware of necessary medical treatment for the rest of her life as well as being scared of public seizures and uncertain of possibility to marry and have children our patient became depressive. But invaluable care of her family, as well as the whole medical team and society resulted that she managed to finish school, be employed, marry and be a mother. The quality of her life has developed greatly and doesn’ t differ from the others.
