Hydrocolloid dressing
The effect of hydrocolloid dressing the treatment of leg ulcers, its influence on ulcer bacteriological, and mycological flora and possible side-effects were presented. Forty patients were treated at the Department of Dermatovenerology during 1992-1994.Before starting the therapy, after 4 and 8 weeks, the smears for bacteriological and mycological examinations were taken. Every second day, later 3-5 days, the occlusive hydrocolloid dressing was placed on the ulcer. The duration of treatment was weeks. The surface of the ulcers was measured by planimetry. Complete healing was obtained in 21 (56, 75%) patients and significant improvement in 12 (32, 43%) cases. There was no change in 4 (10, 81%) patients. The best results were obtained in venous ulcers which were completely healed in 70% of the cases. After 4 weeks treatment, neither the number, nor the bacteriological and mycological flora was changed. Our results suggest that duoderm hydrocolloid dressing is very efficient in the treatment of leg ulcers. It shortens the healing time, relieves the pain and diminishes the engagement of medical staff thus decreasing the total costs of the therapy. Side-effects develop rarely.
