Immunogenicity and safety of La Sota strain of Newcastle disease virus administered to newly hatched chicks by nebulization
Commercial chicks with maternal antibodies for Newcastle disease virus were vaccinated when hatched with lentogenic Newcastle disease virus La Sota strain by fine aerosol of particles, 95 % of them ranging 2-5 microns in diameter. The exposure time to the vaccine produced by an ultrasonic nebulizer was 30, 60 or 300 seconds. The chicks were challenged intramuscularly with virulent Herts 33 Newcastle disease virus strain 21 or 49 days later, or in weekly intervals starting from 7th up to the 49th day of life, and remained fully protected. There was good agreement between the administered dose of virus and level of specific antibodies achieved. Nebulization of La Sota strain of Newcastle disease virus proved to be safe and highly immunogenic.
