Liver structure of certain sea fish from the Adriatic sea (Croatia)
Investigations were carried out on six species of fish from different fish families (Sparidae, Labridae and Merlucciidae). For histologic analysis, samples of liver of ten specimens of black sea bream (Spondylosoma cantharus L.), common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus L.), common two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire), saddled bream (Oblada melanura L.), hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) and rainbow wrasse (Coris julis L.) were obtained from the Adriatic Sea (Croatia). The livers of all species were removed and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. The fixed material was embedded in paraffin and serially sectioned at 10 μ m. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (Romeis, 1968). The percentage of liver cells and blood vessels as well as pancreatic tissue and blood vessels in the pancreas in all investigated livers was obtained by means of stereologic analysis (Kališnik, 1982). The largest percentage of liver cells, 88.96%, and the smallest percentage of pancreatic tissue, 4.30%, were obtained from the liver of hake, whereas the smallest percentage of liver cells, 81.21%, and the largest percentage of pancreatic tissue, 14.21%, were found in common pandora. The largest share of liver blood vessels, 5.49%, was obtained from the liver of hake, whereas the smallest share of the same, 0.04%, was obtained from the liver of common two-banded sea bream. The largest percentage of blood vessels in the pancreas, 1.90%, was found in common pandora, whereas the smallest percentage of the same, 0.70%, was found in common two-banded sea bream.
