Individuals' classification according to BMI and BIA assessments
Global estimates of the number of overweight or obese people are over 1 billion. Body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to classify obesity, and despite the relative crudeness, it has been consistently used in population studies. The aim of this study was to assess the agreement of BMI and body fat percentage values in the adult population from the Eastern Croatia.170 adults participated in our study, 70.6% women and 29.4% men. According to the measured height and weight, BMI was calculated, and body fat (TBF, SBF) percentage values were measured with total and semi body analyzer. 46.0% men participants were overweight, 34.0% normal weight and 20.0% obese according to BMI. TBF has shown the same percentage of men being normal weight, while 22.0% was overweight and even 40.0% obese. Segment analysis results classified 38.0% as obese, 28.0% as normal weight, and 32.0% as overweight. When compared to BMI classification TBF showed fewer women being normal weight (54.2% vs. 61.7%), higher percentage of overweight (28.3% vs. 26.7%) and obese (16.7% vs. 8.3%) women. SBF results grouped 41.7% of women as normal weight, 37.5% as being overweight and 19.2% obese. In conclusion, the results had shown differences in classification according the BMI and body fat percentage. Differences between BMI and body fat percentage are probably the result of BMI inability to include varying contributions of bone mass, muscle mass, and fluid to body mass, while differences between TBF and SBF are most probably the result of different body types.
