Active versus passive microleakage of Epiphany/Resilon and gutta-percha/Ah Plus
The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the apical sealing ability of gutta-percha/ AH Plus versus Resilon/Epiphany along the root canals filled with lateral condensation technique and to assess the influence of passive versus active dye penetration on apical leakage measurements. One hundred and twenty teeth were instrumented and divided into two experimental groups plus two positive and two negative controls. In group 1, the teeth were obturated with gutta-percha/ AH Plus and in group 2 the teeth were obturated with Resilon/ Epiphany (n= 40 per group), using lateral condensation technique. The apical seal was evaluated for both experimental groups with passive and active dye penetration test (n= 20 per group). The teeth were rinsed in water and dissolved in 65% nitric acid for 3 days. Absorbance of extracted dye was determined with a spectrophotometer. Resilon/ Epiphany (group 2) showed less dye penetration in comparison to standard gutta-percha/ AH Plus (group 1), (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the passive and active dye penetration tests (p>0.05). In this in vitro study, Resilon/ Epiphany showed less apical leakage compared to gutta-percha/ AH Plus. Similar results were obtained for apical leakage with both active and passive dye penetration tests.
