Status and trends of the Peregrine in Croatia
The Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus is a regular breeding species in Croatia, with the total population estimated from 160 to 200 pairs and classified as vulnerable. Its population followed the trend known for most of its European range: steep decrease in the 1950s and 1960s followed by a slow increase in number and reoccupation of old breeding sites at the end of the 20th century. It is the most numerous in the coastal region of Croatia, estimated from150 to 190 pairs, with a small number of pairs breeding in mountain and lowland Croatia. In coastal and mountain areas the Peregrine nests on cliffs, while in lowland region it also breeds in abandoned quarries and on high buildings.
