Analysis of efficiency in live-capturing of European brown bears
The efficiency of live-capturing of European brown bears (Ursus arctos) by Aldrich foot snares was analyzed in respect to the trapping season, selection of locations and the trap sites design. During 4689 trap-nights 39 bear captures occurred (120 trap-nights per capture). Males were captured 2.0 times more often than females. Trap sites at permanent bear feeding sites were visited by bears significantly more frequently (P < 0.001) than the other ones. Bears avoided all man-made structures, hence visits to trail sets were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than to cubby-type sets, even if they were built in semi-natural way. Insertion of a piece of foam-rubber under the spring trigger significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the percentage of misses. May through July and September through November were the best periods in the year for the efficiency of bear capturing.
