European Security: Between Ethnic Cooperation and Conflict
Ethnic relations in a country depend on the status and protection of ethnic minorities. The protection of ethnic minorities has proven to be an important issue in the modern European history, which has been connected not only with the development of liberal democracy, but also with the European security. Imbalanced ethnic relations imply appropriate protection of ethnic minorities, which is why this has been one of the key issues for many European countries, both in terms of their political development and democratic perception in the international public eye. Because of this increased attention is being given to the protection of ethnic minorities, it has extended from an exclusively national level to become a part of activities on the international level. Inadequate protection and an unsatisfactory status of ethnic minorities in countries with short history of democracy, but also in those with long democratic traditions, can be the cause of conflict and therefore national security of certain European countries, and European security as well, depends largely on the settlement of issues in the relations between ethnic majorities and ethnic minorities.
