Influence of tillage systems on soil erosion by water on stagnosol in Central Croatia

In all four trial years, the highest soil loss by erosion was recorded in the control-standard treatment after USLE involving ploughed but bare soil. The losses were several times higher than tolerant erosion (T values), estimated at 10 t/ha/year (Schwertmann et al. 1987 ; Bašić, 1992): in the first year 146.3 t/ha, in the second year 110.11 t/ha, in the third year 86.7 t/ha and 54.1 in four year of investigation. In the treatment with up-down the slope ploughing a soil loss of 38.5 t/ha was recorded in maize, 38.1 t/ha in soybean, 0.54 t/ha in winter wheat and 0.40 t/ha in oil rape production. In the no-tillage treatment, erosion loss was lower than in up-down the slope ploughing, but in maize still twice as high as tolerant 22.8 t/ha, in soybean (13.5 t/ha) it exceeded the tolerant T value, while it was insignificant in winter wheat and oil rape (0.22 respectively 0.34 t/ha). Conventional across the slope ploughing was more efficient in terms of soil protection from erosion in all the crops grown, except maize: 11.6 t/ha, in soybean 5.3 t/ha, in winter wheat and oil rape insignificant 0.074 respectively 0.13 t/ha. Very deep across the slope ploughing resulted in a loss of 21.12 t/ha in maize, 5.2 t/ha in soybean, and 0.305 t/ha in winter wheat respectively 0.17 t/ha in oil rape production. Subsoiling with across the slope ploughing rendered the best results in stopping erosional processes: a soil loss of 2.9 t/ha was recorded in maize and soybean while insignificant 0.132 and 0.08 t/ha in winter wheat respectively oil rape.
