Study of hydrothermal transformation mechanism of cuttlefish bone into hydroxyapatite

Mechanism of hydrothermal transformation of aragonitre originated cuttlefish bones, (Sepia officinalis L., Adriatic Sea) into hydroxyapatite (HAP) is described. The mechanism of HAP formation in temperature range between 160-220°C for 1 to 48 hours was studied by quantitative X-ray diffraction using Rietveld refinement method. The diffusion controlled growth along c-axis of HAP crystals has been determined. FT-IR spectra have shown the substitution of CO3 predominately in the PO4 sites (B-type substitution). After 48h of HT treatment the CO3 in the OH sites (A-type substitution) of the structure is also observed. The microstructure of native and transformed bones was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The natural, porous and interconnected structure of bones maintaned through the HT, and HAP crystals have needle like shape.
