Pseudohalides as potentially disrupting ligands of amide supramolecular synthons in picolinamide complexes
The identification of distinct intermolecular interactions that can link neighbouring molecules into extended solid-state networks with well-defined connectivities is of great importance. Extended organic networks mainly based on hydrogen bonds have been mostly investigated so far, but much less work has been done on the construction of metal-organic materials with intermolecular forces due to the difficulty to control their extended structures and/or the coordination modes of individual components. Metal complexes with small organic molecules, especially of restricted conformational freedom, could be used as good model systems for identification of noncovalent interactions that can lead to formation of metal-organic supramolecular architectures. The amide moiety (— C(O)NH2) represents a supramolecular connector that can generate infinite frameworks through hydrogen bonds involving a dimeric R22(8) or catameric C(4) motifs. Furthermore, it is of interest to establish under which conditions these interactions can be sustained. With this aim we studied the pseudolhalide complexes with picolinamide, where pseudohalides are used as competing supramolecular reagents.
