Influences of liming on the heavy metal contents in tobacco leaves

Field experiment with increased rates of carbocalk (waste of sugar factory, 39% CaO) was conducted in autumn 2000 on the Pleternica stagnic albeluvisol (0, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90. t/ha ; four replicates ; experimental plot of fertilization 64.3m2). Tobacco was grown in the 2005 growing season after barley as a preceding crop. Determination of heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr, Sr, Co, Zn, Mn and Fe) in tobacco leaves was made by the ICP technics using wet ashing with cc. HNO3 and cc. H2O2 method. In general, liming considerably influenced on heavy metal concentrations in the leaf. For example, leaf composition on the control (unlimed) was (mg/kg in dry matter) 357 (Mn), 39.0 (Zn), 104 (Fe), 3.64 (Cd), 0.61 (Co), 0.22 (Cr), 3.44 (Ni) and 29.0 (Sr). By application of lime in amount 30 t/ha, significant decreases compared to the control were as follows: 76% (Mn), 14% (Zn), 41% (Cd), 43 % (Co), and 21% (Sr). At the same time, significantly increases were for 21% (Fe), 36% (Cr) and 34% (Ni). By using of lime in the amount 60 t/ha significantly changed only leaf Zn (-59%) and Fe (+52%) compared to the rate of 30 t/ha.
