Electrochemical synthesis of polyaniline from aniline/cyclodextrin solutions

The influence of cyclodextrin on the electrochemical synthesis and properties of polyaniline was determined. The oxidation of aniline and the polymer growth were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance in the presence of either b-cylodextrin or sulfated b-cylodextrin. Measurements were carried out using Pt working electrode and 10-2 mol dm-3 aniline in 1 mol dm-3 NaClO4 supporting electrolyte solution. Various amounts of both cyclodextrins were used in order to obtain aniline : cyclodextrin molar ratios from 1:0 - 1:50. The obtained results show that the addition of cyclodextrins decreases aniline oxidation current as well as overall polymer growth rate. The different effect was obtained in the presence of b-cylodextrin compared to sulfated b-cylodextrin. Structural, electrochemical and morphological properties of resulting polyanilines are also influenced by different type of cyclodextrins.
