A Discrete-Event-Simulation-Based Model of a Construction Site: A Teaching Experience

This paper presents a teaching experience from the Construction Management Graduate Programme held at Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb. The students are taught discrete-event simulation based modeling of construction processes through a real-world test case where every student team is given a different assignment. The main idea of this approach is that integration of these partial tasks/individual assignments - would eventually provide a more complete picture of the actual processes taking place at the construction sites, and at the same time - the students are given an opportunity to participate in an ongoing construction project by observing it and subsequently simulating the observed processes. The first section of the paper gives an overview of discrete-event simulation systems and motives for their application in the Construction Management context. The second part of the paper depicts an experience of creating a partial simulation model of a large building project – from a teaching perspective. A description of the test-case project is given, along with explanations of how individual assignments were chosen in order to simulate complex reality taking place at the jobsite.
