The Ground Beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) of Some of the Forest Communities of Lonjsko polje

Many species of ground beetles are susceptible to changes in their ecosystems, and they can be used to provide an evaluation of the state of an ecosystem and of an area to be protected. Some species that live here are on the list of endangered and protected species in other European countries. Although it is known how many species of ground beetles live in Croatia, there are not many investigations that can be used to establish the distribution of them in various habitats, which is particularly true for the area of lowland Croatia. Because of the great diversity of habitats in Lonjsko polje, we investigated the ground beetle fauna of the forest vegetation and the bushes of this area. During this field research, we used the pitfall traps for a short period of time. They were placed at five stations featuring vegetation of different ages. Eighteen species were collected as, one species of which, Pterostichus cursor, has been found at all the stations. The stations varied in number of individuals and species. Stations in which older forest vegetation has developed have a richer fauna than the one with bushes only.
