Application of zeolites for removal and microbial degradation of different water pollutants
Widespread pollution of water is an important environmental problem, especially due to continuous increase in production and use of different contaminants. With regard to the ever-increasing environmental concerns and relevant legislation, in many areas of world, water pollution is rising. As a result, numerous purification processes have been investigated and among them, biological degradation is commonly used. In the focus of the recent research studies is immobilization or attaching of microorganisms to a solid. These processes are very attractive because of its simplicity and application of zeolitic materials is of great interest. Zeolites and the related materials have interesting and potentially useful properties, such as large surface area, hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties, different ion-exchanged forms, and exert mechanical and chemical resistance. This paper presents a comprehensive account of the methods/techniques used for removal and degradation of different water pollutants with special reference to a review of zeolite application for water purification during the last 10 years.
