Morphological relationships within the Alpine-Dinaric populations of the Genus Iris L., series Pallidae (A. Kern.) Trinajstić (Iridaceae)

Background and purposes: Because of the morphological variability of the Alpine-Dinaric populations of the genus Iris L., series Pallidae (A. Kern.) Trinajstić, taxonomic problems are related to the justifiability of attributing specific or sub-specific status to individual population groups. The description of different numbers of taxa of this complex points to the possibility of the recent differentiation of the series Pallidae in the Alpine-Dinaric region, which it was attempted to clarify with the help of morphometry and a phenetic analytic approach. Material and methods: Analysis was made of 22 Alpine-Dinaric and four cultivated populations of the series Pallidae. Herbified specimens were measured for the length of the steams, the number of leaves, the length of the biggest leaf, the greatest width of the biggest leaf, the length of the smallest leaf, the greatest width of the smallest leaf and the number of flowers. Data analyses included the methods of univariate (basic statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Mann-Whitney tests) and multivariate (PCA and average clustering analysis) statistics. Results and conclusions: Multivariate analysis shows the grouping of Alpine-Dinaric and cultivated populations into four groups which, irrespective of the interpopulation variability present, can be ascribed a distinct taxonomic status. Such results tend to confirm opinions about the existence of the species I. pallida, I cengialti, I. illyrica and I. pseudopallida, grouped in the series Pallidae. A specific position is occupied by the Stara Baška poulation, because of as yet unknown ecological or genetic causes. This kind of grouping is mostly contributed to, by the length of the steam, the greatest length of the biggest leaf, the greatest widths of the largest and the smallest leaf. A high significance was also established within the taxa of the series for other features, except for the length of the plant and the greatest length of the smallest leaf between I. cengialti and I. illyrica, and for the greatest width of the largest leaf and the number of flowers between I. cengialti and I. pseudopallida.
