Influence on biogas substrates seasonality for location selection
Production of biogas is closely linked to substrate for production of methane via anaerobic digestion. From the aspect of substrates’ origin, biogas plant could be perceived either as upgrading of the existing system of agricultural and food processing by-products and other sources of organic waste or as completely new economic activity that engages agricultural area for growing energy crops or as combination of both. Upgrading of the existing system with energy production from organic waste and by-products appears to be closer to the idea of sustainable development as it adds value within the existing system and provokes positive externalities of local and global character. In order to implement biogas production in the existing system, it is necessary to locate an optimal site with available substrate(s) in sufficient and continuous amounts. The paper assumes that by-products and organic waste from agriculture and tourism are the existing system upon which biogas production will be implemented. It provides insight how seasonality in availability of substrates influences the choice of location for biogas plant in Croatia, at the level of administrative units NUTS1 and NUTS2.
