Solvatochromism in a Coordination Polymer Involving Flexible Cu(II) Paddlewheel Units Explored by Liquid-Assisted Grinding Screening

The use of mechanical grinding is rapidly becoming a method of choice for the construction of materials based on non-covalent interactions, such as halogen or hydrogen bonds, as well as of metal-ligand coordination bonds. In the latter context, the application of mechanochemistry is particularly attractive, as it allows the rapid and clean (i.e. solvent- free) construction of porous metal-organic polymers and frameworks. [1, 2] We now demonstrate how liquid-assisted grinding (LAG), a mechanochemical approach developed for cocrystal synthesis, allows the exploration of solvent inclusion within self-assembled porous coordination polymers composed of copper(II) acetate paddlewheel units, bridged by ditopic bis(pyridine) ligands. In particular, the poster presentation will describe mechanochemical solvatochromism, i.e. the colour changes that result from the inclusion of guest molecules with different sizes and chemical functionalities within such porous materials, and that are related to changes in the coordination environments of the constituent Cu(II) centres.
