Synthesis of decorated Cu(II) Paddlewheel Building-Blocks in situ and Supramolecuar Isostructurality

Copper(II) carboxylates are based on a robust dinuclear paddlewheel unit to which additional ligands are attached by coordinating in the apical positions. Their simple syntheses have made copper(II) carboxylates interesting for materials science, especially for constructing porous metal– organic frameworks. [1] The ability of such molecules to form adducts through binding additional ligands, in one application leads to formation of metal-containing frameworks (MOFs) [2, 3, 4]. By reacting the 4, 4'-bipyridine and phenazine molecules with bis(3-benzylpentane-2.4-dionato)copper(II) and tetra-μ -benzoato-κ 8O:O'-dicopper(II) complexes we have succeded to isolate and determine the crystal and molecular structures of the following two compounds: (I) tetra-μ -acetato-κ 8O:O'-bis[(4, 4'-bipyridine-κ N)dicopper(II)] and (II) tetra-μ -benzoato-κ 8O:O'-bis[(phenazine-κ N)dicopper(II)]. These observations provide us with a new method to construct decorated paddle-wheel building-blocks in situ. The structure of the compounds suggest guidelines to achieve supramolecular isostructurality, useful for the synthesis of multi-component metal-organic materials following a design based on solid solution.
