A New Method for the Synthesis of Decorated Paddle-Wheel Building-Blocks in situ
Complexes of CuII with ß-diketonate ligands exhibit a planar structure with a coordinatively unsaturated metal center. Such a structure makes them suitable for exploring weak interactions that steer molecular self-assembly in solids. The ability of such molecules to form adducts through binding additional ligands, in one application leads to formation of metal-containing frameworks (MOFs) [1, 2, 3]. The interaction of 4, 4'-bipyridine molecules with bis(3-benzylpentane-2.4-dionato)copper(II) complex yields two products: (I) bis(3-benzylpentane-2.4-dionato)copper(II)-4, 4'-bipyridine coordination polymer and (II) tetra-μ -acetato-κ 8O:O'-bis[(4, 4'-bipyridine-κ N)dicopper(II)] complex. This observation provides us with a new method for the synthesis of decorated paddle-wheel building-blocks in situ. The structure of the compound (II) will be taken as an example to discuss the supramolecular isostructurality of molecular fragments of a certain class of compounds.
