Rethinking Euroscepticism: The Institutional and Policy Dimension
The article starts by examining the term Euroscepticism and by presenting some recent findings on the general attitude towards the EU in public opinion polls. Afterwards, it discusses Euroscepticism from the institutional and policy perspective. More specifically, the article examines Euroscepticism in the case of the European Constitution and the Common Transport Policy, both of which could be associated with strong Eurosceptic sentiments. On one hand, scepticism towards the European Constitution could be connected with uneasiness towards institutional set-up of the EU and consequently towards the whole integration process. On the other hand, scepticism towards the Common Transport Policy could be characterised as more “ constructive” since it is mainly targeted towards finding alternative solutions to specific policy issues. These two seemingly diverse cases of Euroscepticism have been singled out and put together in an attempt to understand better general causes of the Eurosceptic sentiments and in order to improve the search for most effective strategy in fighting Eurosceptic argumentations.
