Thermal degradation of cotton material treated with organophosphorus flame retardant and different binders
Cotton material was treated with organophosporus based flame retardant (FR) combined with different bonding agents. As the substitution for environmentally unfavourable melamine formaldehyde (MF) two polycarboxylic acids: 1, 2, 3, 4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA) were used in the study. FR effectiveness was tested with limiting oxygen index (LOI) technique, according to ASTM D 2863-08 method. The thermal degradation of cotton has been studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC). It has been determined that conventional cotton textiles can be rendered flame retardant by chemical after-treatment with the novel system. The increasing need to use environmentally friendly FR finishes has been particularly emphasized with the application of the eco-friendly binder.
