Deformity correction in vitamin D resistant hypophosphatemic rickets

There are many modalities of treatment for complex lower extremity deformity in vitamin D-resistant hypophosphatemic rickets. We performed correction for bowing deformity of the lower extremities due to vitamin D-resistant hypophosphatemic rickets of five children, all girls.The operative method was acute correction by closing wedge osteotomies of femur and tibia using plates and screws in four children. In one girl gradual opening osteotomies of both tibia with Ilizarov method was performed. Three girls were reoperated due the recurrence of bowing. Closing wedge reosteotomies were performed in two cases and in one case a guided growth by new eight-Plate from Orthofix in minimally invasive way was performed. In future our strategy in orthopedic treatment children with deformity and vitamin D-resistant hypophosphatemic rickets will be guided growth by minimal invasive surgery using new eight-Plate. Guided growth can harness the robust potential of a child's growth plate to correct angular deformities. The new eight-Plate from Orthofix is a minimally invasive, secure implant that allows speedy postoperative recovery with immediate weight bearing. The eight- Plate uses two holes and diverging screws to function like a hinge and avoid growth plate compression. It gently guides the natural growth process and restores limb alignment without the need for invasive osteotomy.
