Dermato-Venerologie in Kroatien
The development of dermatovenerology in Croatia paralleled this process in other parts of erstwhile Austria-Hungary throughout the 19th century. The foundation of the first specialised hospitals as well as the establishment of dermato-venerological units and their transformation into academic departments and chairs in the early 20th century was a process of slow growth provoked mostly by the spread of syphilis and particularly Škrljevo disease (an endemic form of syphilis) which appeared first in 1790 in the Rijeka (former Fiume) region spreading thereafter to other areas. In this chapter this developement is decscribed to address additional aspects of the history of dermatology with regard to history of German -speaking Dermatology.
