Up and down in Croatian and Hungarian
In this presentation we are concerend with some non-literal uses of Croatiana and Hungarian adverbs and prefixes relating to verticaility (i.e. inherently denoting the two extreme points on the verticality scale, UP and DOWN). They can be apparently used to refer to motion and distance on the horizontal plane, as in: (1) I stvarno mi se ne ide gore u Zagreb. 'and I really don’ t feel like going to Zagreb’ (2) Fölmentünk Pestre, és megnéztük az Elektrotechnikai múzeumot 'We went up to Budapest and visited the Electrotechnical Museum' We compare these with English expressions like: (3) I'm flying in from Jersey (British Channel Islands) on Friday morning - flying in to Luton then coming down to Lodon (no Luton isn't in London even if that's what the airport claims) by train - if I can work out which ones I need to get. (4) There was of course a great difficulty when we came down to Lon-don. and suggest possible motivation, pointing out some cross-linguistic differences and similarities.
