Education for Sustainable Development in the Context of the Bologna process

This article examines the realisation of the idea of sustainable development in the context of higher education reform, that is the Bologna process, as a basis for qualitative changes in higher education. Sustainable development is interpreted as a living principle (principle of life, life principle?) and determinant of future ; therefore in particular chapters it emphasizes the importance of education for the growth of the idea of sustainability. Importance of professional education and lifelong education for sustainable development is particularly underlined, because they have the power and obligation of developing competencies of new generations for preserving the planet and living responsibly in harmony with nature. Higher education of teachers for sustainable development demands new instructional design, putting the student in the centre of educational process and new didactical and methodical approaches, therefore this paper points out the importance of output students' competencies, that is, changes that stimulate the development of skills and abilities of independent research and learning as well as development of the ability of lifelong education for sustainable development. In the context of sustainable development it is normally the case that competence development precedes in an integrated and cyclical manner throughout all programmes. Therefore the Bologna process has to pay attention to the role of quality in the process of designing and re-designing, developing and implementing study programmes of education for sustainable development.
