Albania – An Analysis of Energy Supply Options until 2030, Application of IAEA's tool MESSAGE in South Eastern Europe

The main objective of the analysis shown in the report is to compare different options of energy supply for Albania. As Albanian energy system is relatively small it was important to take into account existing and future possible links to neighbouring energy systems as well as energy supply options and resources available in the region. Particularly, special attention was given to Albania's immediate neighbours – Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia, while rest of the South Eastern Europe (including Italy) area was modelled as energy hubs (i.e. market exchange points with predefined market prices). Energy systems taken into account were: electricity system, gas supply network and oil and oil products system (refineries). Useful energy demand for four countries (Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro) was developed using IAEA's tool MAED (Model for Analysis of Energy Demand). Energy systems were modelled and optimised using IAEA's model MESSAGE (Model for Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental Impact). Alternative strategies for energy supply were examined through several scenarios. The focus was on the electricity supply system. The results of the simulations are presented and conclusions on future energy supply options are drawn.
