The Appearance and Development of the Portrait Photography in the 19th Century
As is the invention of printing made democratic the written word, the appearance of photography in 19th century made democratic the picture. The portrait, as one of the most common and characteristic photographic motives, is one of the starters of development and the presence of photography. In this paper the development of 19th century portrait photography is described and analyzed. The development of photographic techniques from its beginnings to appearance of panchromatic photographic materials, and representatives of photographic styles that were using different systems and photographic portraiting techniques in 19th century is analyzed. The paper indicates the link and uniqueness of photographic techniques and creations, and analyses the period in which the basic semantic and syntactic principles of black-and-white portrait photography are set. Also, some, forgotten historical photographic portraiting techniques are analyzed.
