Narratives in Croatian prime time TV news
Over the last two decades media in Croatia has undergone rapid social, political and economic transition. Changes include the transformation from one political (socialistic, communistic and totalitarian) and economic system (planned economy) into another one which is clearly defined as a liberal democracy with market economy. It was not only the Homeland war (1990-1995) that influenced media rhetoric, but also democratization and deideologization of society, impact of the free media market and commercial competence, plus globalization. Television news structure and media text (including voice over, tones and visuals) have changed as well. As a result, today we have higher rate of news personalization and news popularization. Content analysis and narrative analysis have been carried out on the sample of 1032 prime-time TV news packages (public service HTV for period 1991-2006 and two commercial national televisions Nova TV and RTL for period 2005-2006). Narratives and mythical structures in news were analyzed. The paper presents the results of this research.
