Tendencies in the Development of Shipboard Electrical Propulsion

For a great majority of vessels simple mechanical propulsion has proved satisfactory. By developing highly sophisticated control systems the manoeuvring characteristics are being significantly improved. The growth and development of regular alternative current electric motor drive and its growing application on shore has undoubtedly contributed to the employment of electric propulsion aboard ships. Modern technology and new materials have opened ways to new propulsion designs (motor-propeller, electromagnetic propulsion, combustible cells, impulse propulsion system), some of which are already being used while others are still being evaluated.
