One year study of ochratoxin A in plasma of healthy volunteers in Croatia
Nephrotoxic mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA) is supposed to be involved in the etiology of endemic nephropathy. However, it was found frequently in low concentrations in the plasma of healthy inhabitants in the countries where this disease is not found. In our work 50 plasma samples were collected from the healthy blood donors in each season (June and September 1997 ; January and March 1998) in each of the five Croatian cities (three continental: Zagreb, Varaždin and Osijek ; and two at the Mediterranean coast: Rijeka and Split). The presence of OTA was determined by use of HPLC (with detection limit of 0.2 ng OTA/ml of plasma). The seasonal and regional differences of OTA finding were calculated with loglinear model, parameters were estimated using maximum likelihood. OTA above the detection limit was found in plasma samples of all cities in all seasons, but the frequency of positive samples was not equal. In our study, the highest frequency of OTA positive samples was found in June. The highest frequency of samples with OTA concentration above 1.0 ng/ml plasma was found in samples collected in June in Osijek. The highest seasonal variations of OTA finding were found in the same city. Rijeka was the city with lowest frequency of positive samples.
