Children’ s Digital Libraries Developments and Trends
Digital natives, net generation, dot generation and Google generation are just some of the terms attached today to children and young adults in order to stress that they are a generation that is growing up in a world dominated by the Internet. The information landscape has changed transforming learning, teaching and communication. It has also changed library services. Electronic contents and publishing as well as digitised materials can be searched, browsed and printed, and children have become information consumers who can easily switch among commercial contents, networking sites and electronic library services to satisfy their information needs. Those are enormous challenges that are put in front of librarians who balance between providing information services in electronic environment and educate children for an optimal use of services and information. From one hand, children need assistance in turning information into knowledge and in developing navigation skills, while from the other hand there is a need to develop Internet interfaces and electronic materials which enable information usage in a useful and safe way. In this work some trends in digital libraries for children in the last decade are examined.
