Some remarks on the logic of Broome's metanormative theory
During the last decade John Broome has developed an approach to the analysis normativity, according to which there are two types of requirements (source and property requirements). Normative source is connected with reality by a corresponding property. The code is a function which for each source of normativity, agent and situation ("world") delivers a set of requirements, which if satisfied, endow the agent with the corresponding property. From the perspective of logic modelling Broome's approach asks for concurrent comprehension of at least two distinct logics, and at least one more for a significant number of normative sources (like rationality). A logic of reality, a logic of a code type, and for some codes at least one logic of intentionality (including action) should be taken into account in order to understand the normative property that an agent may have. The aim of this talk is, first, to point out some logical constraints that must be introduced in order to preserve the soundness of the approach, and, second, to show the perspectives of its development.
