Corrosion inhibition of copper in hydrochloric acid under flow conditions
The influence of flow rate and temperature on inhibitory efficiency of 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethylimidazole on copper corrosion in hydrochloric acid (HCl) was investigated. The study was performed using electrochemical methods of potentiostatic polarization (Tafel extrapolation and polarization resistance determination). Potentiostatic tests carried out at three different flow rates (v1 = 0.0045 m/s, v2 = 0.0075 m/s and v3 = 0.0136 m/s) and at three different temperatures (25°C, 35°C, and 45°C). Results were compared with the efficiency of a commercial inhibitor for copper corrosion under the same conditions. The investigation shows that flow rate and temperature both influence corrosion of copper in uninhibited and inhibited HCl. The comparision of the efficiency of 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethylimidazole and commercial inhibitor shows that the latter did not inhibit corrosion in 0.5 M HCl under flow conditions.
