Cultural Globalization: A Complex Interplay of Cultural Spaces and Cultural Times
Globalization has opened up different and new cultural spaces and thus introduced new interpretations and meanings of time and history. This has enhanced cultural creativity within the local, national and ‘ world’ cultures and injected new technologically induced dynamics. Cultural globalization refers to the raise of new cultures and cultural interactions that go beyond understanding of multiculturality and cultural diversity, and thus transcend the existing cultural borders. In an effort to discuss the structuring of cultural globality, I would like to concentrate on cultural spaces and cultural times that interact within the global context. Such interactions contribute to the formation of new cultures that are rising from an overall ‘ culturalization’ , a magma where cultures melt and mix, not only among themselves, but also with many other areas, and particularly with politics (democratic culture, the culture of violence, the culture of peace, of war, etc.) and economy (cultural economy ; cultural industries, cultural markets, etc.). Understandings and interpretations of cultural spaces and cultural times largely vary. Deterritorialization is matched with ‘ the production of locality’ (e.g., A.Appadurai) ; the notion of space is projected into virtual space (e.g., M.Castells). The interactions between spaces and times produce in parallel new cultural divides and new cultural constructions. It becomes possible to experience different places and different historical times simultaneously, in the condensed, ‘ intensified’ and highly individualized forms. New cultures stem from such experiences. They are globally accessible, understandable or easy to be ‘ translated’ , and they provide for the formation and establishment of new globalized, ‘ world’ cultures. However, they are not clearly structured yet, which supports speculations about their nature and meanings. My intention is to contribute to the definition and interpretation of cultural spaces and cultural times in the context of cultural globality, and to show how their relationships interrelate with the all-encompassing processes of globalization.
