Effect of different diet conditions on the liver mineral content in compensatory liver growth

The mineral content (zinc, iron, magnesium and calcium) in liver of male Balb/C mice fed different diets in compensatory liver growth dynamics was evaluated. Three groups of mice (5-8 animals per group) were fed, over 21 day, diets enriched with corn oil or olive oil (5% addition to standard pellet, w/w) or standard pellet diet. The animals were partialy hepatectomised under aether anaesthesia, sacrified 1st, 2nd, 7th and 21st day latter. Olive oil with predominant oleic acid has quite different composition than corn oil in which linoleic acid prevails. It is well known that the diets with different kinds of oils leed to changes in the tissue mineral content. Minerals were determined by ICP spectrometry, after microwave tissue digestion by HNO3 and H2O2. The zinc liver content was increased until 21st day in mice fed standard pellet and first two days after partial hepatectomy in both mice fed olive oil and corn oil, compared to intact animals. Zinc was also increased in mice fed standard pellet lst day after operation, compared to both olive oil and corn oil fed animals and 7th day in mice fed standard pellet, compared to those fed corn oil. The magnesium amount in liver was not changed until 21st day, when was significantly higher in all three groups, compared to intact mice. The calcium content was incresed 1st day in mice fed diets enriched with olive oil and 7th day in mice fed corn oil, in comparison with intact animals. 7th day calcium was higher in mice fed olive oil, compared to group fed corn oil, Like magnesium, calcium was unexpectedly increased in all three groups 21st day, compared to intact animals. The iron content also increased 2 day after operation in both mice fed diets enriched with olive oil and corn oil and 7th day in mice fed corn oil, compared to control animals. These results show the effect of unsaturated fatty acids, on the zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron content in liver during compensatory liver growth.
