Gender and Trisomy 21 Analysis on Aborted Fetus Tissue

Amniocentesis examination showed a female fetuswith trisomy 21 suggesting Down syndrome. After med-ical pregnancy termination, administrative mistake tookplace and the fetus was regarded as male. The onlymaterials left were the heart and femur stored in forma-lin. Amniocentesis results could only be confirmed by the available tissue examination. The heart was sub-mitted to formalin fixation and embedded in paraffinfollowing standard procedure. The femur needed to bedecalcinated for a longer period than standard bonemarrow trephine biopsy and then was submitted to for-malin fixation and embedded in paraffin. FISH tech-nique was performed on sections from both tissues us-ing probes for chromosomes X and Y, and a probe forchromosome 21. Results showed two signals that repre-sented X chromosome and three signals that represent-ed chromosome 21. The data suggested that final de- scription of the aborted fetus was an administrative mis-take indeed.
