Hierarchical decision making in analyzing the design parameters of alternative solutions

The designer must make decisions or draw conclusions during the conceptual phase, and this is not always easy because of the lack of necessary information and time limitations (restrictions). The importance of quick evaluation of notional solutions, which are generated during the design process, knows form earlier. However, the problem appears during the clearly defined decision making procedure, and also during the defining procedure. The designer must be objective while considering some of the alternative design solutions. The design process is defined as the transformation of the set and its attributes (N.P.Suh 1990.) from the abstract idea into a realistic design solution. Conceptual phase is often shown as a set of abstract concepts (G.Pahl&W.Beitz 1993). There are different models for evaluating design solutions (S. Rudolph, 1995 ; G. Green 1994 ; N. Cross 1994 et al). The special deficiency of existing models is the inability of explaining the evaluation process. The process of identifying variant solutions and evaluation criterions is very important in the process of evaluation the hierachical criterion structure in form of a tree. Evaluation model is based on the theory of graphs, known as potential method.
