How to prepare dusty old ladies for showing up in public: organizing library collection of a Monastery of St. Frane in Zadar
This poster presents project of organizing library at a Monastery of St. Frane in Zadar. The monastery was founded in 13th century, approximately around year 1212, when Franciscan order came to Adriatic coast. From that period, the monastery is closely connected with religious and cultural life of Zadar area. Among its library collection there are lots of rare items, particularly those from the period of 13th to 19th century. It should be pointed out that there is a rich collection of manuscripts written on parchment, collection of hand-written books (codeces) and collection of around 120 incunabulas. Besides, there are many rare items from 16th century (cinquecentina) and 17th century. As presumed, there are around 40.000 items in the library. The last known inventory was destroyed in World War II and although there were few serious attempts to make a catalogue of books, there is no complete catalogue or inventory that could show a current state of collection. The project of organizing library is carried out by Departments of Library and Information Science of Universities of Zadar and Osijek and Monastery of St. Frane in Zadar. A project includes making an inventory, cleaning items from dust and other steps concerning protection of items, cataloguing collection according to international standards for cataloguing old and rare books and presenting the collection throughout Online public access catalogue (OPAC) and printed catalogues of some collections, digitizing selected items, assigning corresponding call numbers to each item and putting it on cleaned and disinfected shelves in completely rearranged and cleaned library. The whole work is carried out by students of library sciences that are supervised by teachers from Departments of Library and Information Science of Universities of Zadar and Osijek and representative from Monastery of St. Frane in Zadar. That way a library of monastery became a place were students acquire practical knowledge. Poster presents what is done by now in the library and shows some of the most valuable items that were found there until April 2009.
