Pre and postoperative values of antioxidative enzymes in colorectal cancer patients
It is controversial whether a reduced activity of the glutathione peroxidase (GSH Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in blood is associated with an increased risk and poor prognosis in cancer patients. This prospective trial evaluates changes in antioxidative enzymes in patients with colorectal carcinoma before and after radical surgery. In 20 patients with colorectal cancer SOD and GSH Px in sera were measured preoperatively and compared with healthy volunteers' values. Postoperative changes have been obtained on the1st, 3rd, 7th and 30th postoperative day after surgery. In colorectal cancer patients preoperative values of GSH Px and SOD have been significantly decreased comparing with healthy subjects. In all postoperative measured days there were increased values of antioxidative enzymes but significantly only on the 3rd day for SOD (p = 0· ; ; 039), and on the 7th day for GSH Px (p = 0· ; ; 035). Low preoperative antioxidative enzymes values could be the result of tumor induced oxidative stress. Removal of the tumor, as well as systemic response to surgery could cause increased antioxidant enzymes activity.
