Grammaticalization and the lexicon: Core-and-periphery model vs. prototype approach
The present article is concerned with procedures adequate for the modelling of some dynamic phenomena such as grammaticalization processes in the lexicon. In part 2, we first introduce Lipkas idea of re-discovery in linguistics which is shown to characterize the relation between prototype theory and the Praguian core-and-periphery model. We then illustrate the range of grammaticalization phenomena for which an appropriate framework is sought. We also sketch traditional approaches to the problem and subsequently point out the inadequacies of some prototype-based approaches. Drawing on Praguian functional sources, we finally show in part 4 how a prototype account of the phenomena should be modified to accommodate the data.
