Treatment options for invasive fungal infections
The early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections (IFI) is often difficult and uncertain. Laboratory diagnostic tests: plymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of RNA or DNA, ELISA testing for circulating galactomanan, microscopy, culture and immunohistochemical staining beside greater use of routine high-resolution computed tomography (CT) can be helpful in predicting or diagnosing IFI. Due to difficulties in the diagnosis of IFI they are usually classified as "proven", "possible" or "probable". However, histological and/or microbiological proof is only rarely obtained in the early stages of infection.
