Biochemical parameters in non-Hodgkins's lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are characterized by significant variability in the course and prognosis. A number of clinical and laboratory parameters have been identified as prognostic factors. A model of independent factors proposed for clinical use under the name "international prognostic index" is result of prognostic factors investigation. To investigate whether the simple biochemical parameters at diagnosis are useful to identify uniform subsets of patients according to prognosis, uni- and multivariate analysis were done in newely diagnosed NHL patients (pts). In 142 (65%) pts the aggressive type of lymphoma, and in 75 (35%) pts the indolent type of lymphoma was diagnosed Median age was 55 years, range 14-87. Male to female ratio was 1.1 (115/102). The survival was assodciated with following biochemical parameters: lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)(p=0.0000), serum cooper (p=0.0317), serum alcaline phosphatase (p=0.003), AST (p=0.0013), serum iron (p=0.0025), acid uric (p=0.0169), and serum calcium (p=0.0211). We conclude that simple, routinely taken paramaters are useful in predicting prognosis of NHL, and contain considerable prognostic information. Among biochmical parameteres only parameter AST contributed indenpendently to overall predictive power.
