Crisis and Vulnerabilities: The Role of the Regulation
The core of the current global economic crisis lies in the financial sector. Much of it is due to the regulatory failures. From 'soft-touch regulation' approach we shall soon be moving towards the more appropriate regulation of the financial sector. The paper looks at the Croatian experience with the banking system regulation in the recent past and the lessons learned. What were the macroeconomic stability and financial sector stability concerns, how did the monetary and banking system regulatory policy react and what are the results in terms of vulnerabilities, particularly in the context of the current crisis. We show that, due to the range of unorthodox regulatory actions, Croatian banking sector has entered the crisis significantly less vulnerable than if the policymaking had followed the popular and widespread 'soft-touch regulation' approach prior to the financial system meltdown which started in 2008.
