Recent tectonic movements and earthquakes in Croatia

The terntory of Croatia is proved to be seismotectonically active. Movements of the Adriatic microplate and resistance of the Dinarides cause this activity. Location of rock masses having different specific density is of crucial importance. Characteristically, they vary in size and location within the crust and represent the major structural units. It was shown that, besides the Moho discontinuity, there is the basement of sediments plane which is quite important in structural study of the crust as well. This plane is defined by study of seismic sections. It was found out that it is located between 3 and 17 km below the Adriatic Sea and the Dinarides margin. Two facts are particularly important: the break of the Adriatic microplate into three separate blocks and the formation of seismically most active zones in Furlania and in the Southern Adriatic. Stress-strain data and data on location of seismotectonically active zones have been used in study of tectonic movements. Generally, it was shown that: 1) movements of geological structures in the northern part of the Dinarides are predominantly towards the southeast; 2) in the southern part of the Dinarides rapid push of the Adriatic microplate under the Dinarides is still active. Characteristics of geological setting and structural pattern and the arrangement of seismotectonically active zones have been used as a basis for the geodetic reference point network design. Data on earthquake focii compared with structural and geodetic measurements on surface have been used to evaluate the direction and the magnitude of tectonic movements.
